FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT INDOOR TANNING

Q.: What is the Texas 24 Hour Law?
A.: At Maison Du Soleil we are completely committed to customer satisfaction. We must, however, also follow all Federal and State laws and regulations. The Texas Department of Health Services strictly forbids a salon to allow you to tan more than once in one 24-hour period. Therefore, if you tanned at 3:00 pm today you cannot tan until at least 3:00 pm tomorrow.

Please understand, this is not a policy we like to enforce but we are bound by the law. If you would like to contact the Texas Department of Health concerning this matter, please contact them by one of the methods provided below:

     • Click Here To Visit Their Website
     • Send Them An Email
     • Call Them: (512) 458-7111 or 1-888-963-7111

You should also call your state and/or federal representative.

Q.:  If I purchase a membership at Maison Du Soleil, can I tan everyday?

A.:  Membership packages at Maison Du Soleil are unlimited, meaning you can tan once a day, every day. Our suggestion however, is to tan every other day until you get the base tan you desire. Then to maintain your tan, tan 2 to 3 times per week.

Q.:  I have recently started tanning and noticed several white areas on my back. They are worrying me, do I have a skin condition?
A.:  The white areas you have noticed are more than likely the result of what is called pressure points. This usually occurs when you continuously lay on a part of your body that is holding a lot of your weight, such as your shoulder blades. It's like pressing down on a part of your body with your finger and holding it there for a while. When you lift your finger, that area of your body stays white for a while. What happens is the part of the body receiving that pressure is deprived of blood flow, therefore deprived of oxygen. Your skin requires oxygen to tan. Try lying in a different position or moving your position when tanning.  Lying on your stomach also helps!

Q.:  Do tanning accelerators/intensifiers really work?
A.:  Lotions created for Indoor Tanning help you tan faster by design for several reasons.

  • The lotion replenishes moisture in the skin. Moist skin tans much better, faster, and easier than dry skin.
  • The lotion is designed to actually draw the UV rays to it. This helps activate the melanin more quickly resulting in a quicker tan.
  • Many lotions actually help to reduce and combat the signs of aging by supplying your skin with needed vitamins, minerals and amino acids.
  • Lotions can help you tan better than using no lotions at all.  By using lotions you can tan faster in less sessions.

Using Indoor Tanning Lotions = Smart Tanning!

Q.:  My beauty-fashion magazine says all tanning is harmful...including tanning booths.  Is this true?
A.:  UVA and UVB rays (the same type you receive from indoor tanning units) is essential to all living things. Think about it.....plants, animals, and humans cannot survive without sunlight or some form of it. It has also been proven that UV exposure actually helps to develop Vitamin D in your body. Something very important to your bone structure. As far as beauty magazine statements, magazines receive millions of dollars in advertising each year from sunscreen manufacturers. Their job is to sell what their manufacturers advertise with them.

Q.:  Do I have to wear those goggles?
A: ABSOLUTELY.  It is a proven fact that sunlight can damage your eyes. The damage is long term and permanent. Just as you do not stare directly at the sun without proper protection, you should not expose your eyes to the tanning lamps without proper protection. Approved eyewear stops 99% of the UV rays while still allowing you to see. Towels, eyelids, coins, sunglasses, etc., do not protect your eyes from UV rays. Besides the facts of long term eye damage, it is required by LAW to wear approved eye protection while tanning. Click Here for a look at our Safety Bulletin concerning your eyes.

LITTLE KNOWN FACTS

Did you know that..............
All life on earth is dependant on the sun, and that the absence of sunlight
would mark the end of ALL life on earth.

Did you know that........
Vitamin D3 is known as the ‘sun vitamin’ because it can be built up in the
skin.  An absence of sunlight can lead to a deficiency of D3, which is integral in the absorption of calcium, which can lead directly to osteoporosis.

Did you know that..............
Doctors prescribe UV therapy (tanning beds) to combat osteoporosis....and that raw fish has high amounts of vitamin D3, which is how Eskimos maintain high levels of D3 without the sun. I think I would rather tan than eat raw fish.

Did you know that..............
A U.S. epidemiological study of more than 85,000 women were examined for skin cancer and questioned about their tanning experience. The results showed that pigmentation is the best protection against basal cell carcinoma. The deeper the tan, the lower the skin cancer incident rate.  In other words, your body's tan is it's own natural self defense system against any burning by the sun.

Did you know that.................
Among 4.6 million registered US Navy personnel, the most frequent melanoma cases occurred among ‘indoor’ workers. The incident rate among sailors that worked on deck was less frequent and when it did appear, it occurred parts of the body that were normally covered. The lowest number of melanoma incidents occurred among sailors that worked alternatively above and below deck.  Thus, moderate sun tanning was not found to be harmful but actually helpful in assisting the body to protect itself against burning by the sun.

The bottom line on indoor tanning is.......
Moderate sun tanning not only looks good, but statistics show it can reduce your risk of skin cancer
and other illnesses including osteoporosis. Tanning is a defensive mechanism. Skin that is not tanned is defenseless against harmful effects of uncontrolled, immoderate exposure to sunlight.
